June 5 – Chargers second at sectional, move on

By Mark Murdock - | Jun 5, 2023

KENDALLVILLE — Tell most boys golf coaches that they’ll have five scores in the 70s on a particular day, and they’d be almost certain to take the deal.

It worked out fine for the Carroll Chargers in the East Noble Sectional at Noble Hawk on June 2 as they shot a season-best score of 310 to finish and earn a trip to next week’s regional.

All five players shot either 77 or 78 to extend the team’s season. Leo repeated as team champion at 298, posting three of the top five scores.

Host East Noble shot 316 with the help of a 2-under-par 69 from medalist Caden Anderson and snagged the final team regional berth, edging Columbia City by two strokes.

The top three teams, plus the top three finishers not on those teams, earned a spot in June 8’s regional at Stonehenge in Winona Lake.

Columbia City took two of those spots with a 73 by Kam Hoag and a 74 by Andrew Hedrick. Garrett’s Carter Demske also advanced with a 74, his second straight individual trip to the regional.

Donald Dimberio and Griffin Scheele both shot 77s for the Chargers, with Joseph Sellers, Camden Meyers and Sam Campbell all shooting 78s.

“This is probably the best we’ve shot all year which was a good day to have it,” Carroll coach Justin Shippy said. “You get to this point in the game, it’s top three and move on.

“I’m so proud of my group today, five guys in the 70s. As a coach that’s about the best we’re going to do. Leo’s very good, hats off to them. We’ll give it another whirl next week.

The Chargers started on Hole No. 1, and had to contend with increasing winds as the round was winding down.

“The front nine wasn’t as bad,” Shippy said. “We shot really well on the front nine. We got to Hole 15 and that wind picked up. Those last four holes were tough. We hung together and I’m extremely proud of them.”

After Anderson’s win for East Noble, Justin Hicks had a 72 for Leo and Wes Opliger and Caden Matthias shot 73s.

Columbia City had won the title at Warsaw last year, but was shifted to the East Noble Sectional this year.

“Give East Noble credit. I never underestimated them on this golf course,” Eagles coach Andrew Thompson said. “Then Anderson does his typical thing.

“We’re fortunate we get Andrew and Kam moving on. It would have been nice to get out. It’s kind of disappointing. Give credit to Leo and Carroll. They played well. We just had a rough back nine.”
