Carroll girls qualify for state cross country meet
MARION — The Carroll High School girls cross country team will be headed back to familiar territory this weekend: The IHSAA state meet in Terre Haute.
Last Saturday, the Chargers competed at the semistate meet at Indiana Wesleyan University. The top five teams from each of four semistates spread across Indiana move on to state. Carroll’s girls were fifth at Marion with 125 points. Homestead won the meet with 79 points.
The Chargers were led by Haile Schiffeneder, who was ninth in 18:47.1. Hadley Snell was 16th in 19:10.1; Megan Lanning 27th in 19:28.5; Marybeth Hall 48th in 19:55.4; Maura Sluffer 64th in 20:36.3; Stella Kruse 92nd in 20:47.5; and Paige Hout 105th in 21:01.
Carroll girls coach Luke Miller said his girls ran a good race.
“We have some girls who have been to state before, and some who haven’t, so it’s a good mix,” Miller said.
The Chargers will head to Terre Haute on Friday, so they’ll have a chance to see and experience the course before the big race on Saturday morning.
Carroll’s boys, meanwhile, finished 10th with 286 points. Fishers took first with 79 points.
The Chargers were led by Blake Neitert, who finished 29th in 16:27.9. Aidan Borbiev was 58th in 16:53.7; Elijah Silcox 91st in 17:18.5; Jacob Blackmon 101st in 17:32.5; Sawyer Mattocks, 111th in 17:42.2; Jacob Kieffer 124th in 17:56.3; and Charles Basham 126th in 17:57.7.
The state meet at Terre Haute is held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Sports Center. The girls meet starts at noon, with the boys set to follow at 2:30 p.m.
