Schools close doors for day as winter storm arrives
A winter storm reached Fort Wayne and surrounding area Wednesday morning as forecast.
A travel watch has been issued for Allen County, according to Allen County Homeland Security.
Heavy snow began overnight, creating hazardous travel conditions for the early morning commute. Heavy snow is expected to continue through mid-afternoon. Only essential travel is recommended.
During a winter weather Travel Watch, “Conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a watch local travel advisory, only essential travel, such as to and from work, or in emergency situations is recommended, and emergency action plans should be implemented by businesses, schools, government agencies, and other organizations.”
The public is urged to plan for difficult travel conditions and avoid travel today, Wednesday, Jan. 25, if possible.
Several postponements and cancellations have been announced.
• All branches of the Allen County Public Library are closed today.
• All Fort Wayne Community schools will have eLearning Wednesday, Jan. 25. Students should log into their Schoology accounts Wednesday morning for instruction from their teachers.
• Southwest Allen County Schools has called an eLearning Day for all SACS students on Wednesday, Jan. 25. A Facebook post adds: “We will monitor Allen County Travel Advisories to determine if there will be after-school activities. We will communicate the decision after 1 p.m. on Wednesday.”
• Northwest Allen County Schools is implementing eLearning for Wednesday, Jan. 25, due to impending bad weather.
Carroll Freshman Orientation and Academic Showcase will be moved to Wednesday, Feb. 1.
• East Allen County Schools has canceled school for Wednesday, Jan. 25, creating an eLearning day. All students are expected to be online by 9:45 a.m. for classes and attendance. More information on eLearning is available at the top of the East Allen County Schools website.
• Canterbury School in Fort Wayne will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 25. According to a Facebook post, the school expects the campus to be open Thursday morning.
• Bishop Dwenger High School will implement “a traditional/asynchronous eLearning day” Wednesday, Jan. 25. Students are instructed to check Canvas announcements for details.
• The University of Saint Francis campus in Fort Wayne will move all in-person classes to online classes on Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Students should check Canvas course pages for instructions. All clinicals and other off-campus classes are canceled. Online and Virtual Campus classes will continue as scheduled.
Regular campus operations are scheduled to resume at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26.
• Due to the Winter Storm Warning issued for the Fort Wayne/Allen County region, the Wednesday, January 25, Public Art Commission meeting is canceled. The January meeting agenda items will be discussed at the Feb. 22, 2023, meeting.
• Cancer Services will be operating on a limited basis Jan. 25. Clients can call for assistance or speak to their advocate at 260-484-9560 during normal business hours, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. However, both locations (6316 Mutual Drive and 3420 E Paulding Road) will be closed to walk-ins, prior appointments and classes.
• Several Parkview Physicians Group locations are planning a delayed opening Jan. 25.

• The Purdue University Fort Wayne campus (including IU Fort Wayne) will be closed Wednesday, January 25, in anticipation of hazardous travel conditions caused by an expected winter storm.
All on-campus events and activities are also canceled; however, the men’s basketball game will continue as planned on Wednesday evening.
Unless otherwise announced, the campus will return to normal operations Thursday, Jan. 26, and conduct business as usual.
• Trinity English Lutheran Church, 450 W. Washington Blvd., Fort Wayne, canceled all on-site scheduled activities for Wednesday, Jan. 25.
