The History Center continues the George R. Mather Sunday Lecture Series, Sunday, Nov. 6, at the History Center, 302 E. Berry St., Fort Wayne. In this lecture, “First in Their Field: The All- American Girls Professional Baseball League,” Kristie Erickson, deputy executive director of The History Museum in South Bend, will look at the women who made up the AAGPBL who were pioneers in sports yet played for the love of the game. The league was formed following a shortage of male players after the entrance of the United States into World War II. In the mid-sized towns of the Midwest, there was significant support for the 15 teams that were part of the league. These spanned from Michigan to Minnesota, with two teams in Indiana — the Fort Wayne Daisies and South Bend Blue Sox.
The History Center invites the public to “hear stories, see photos, and honor the inspiring legacy of these women who played hardball at the highest level.
The lecture begins at 2 p.m. and admission is free to the public. To attend the lecture virtually, contact the History Center in advance at administration@fwhistorycenter.org.
Mather lectures are made possible through the Floyd and Betty Lou Lancia Family Foundation and Indiana Humanities.
