UPDATE: John Lloyd Vires, 37, was charged with murder on Sept. 23 in reference to the homicide investigation that occurred on Sept. 22 at a residence located in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue. Vires is currently being held in the Allen County Jail.

The City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the intersection of Spring Street and Franklin Avenue in reference to a subject armed with a gun on Sept. 22 at approximately 1:06 a.m.

The caller informed dispatch that a male subject entered a residence in the area and fired a gun. Officers arrived on the scene and were directed to a residence in the 1600 block of Franklin Avenue.

Officers entered the residence and located an adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office was contacted and notified of the shooting at approximately 2 a.m.

An autopsy has been completed, the decedent has been positively identified and the next of kin has been notified in the death of William H. Erhardt, 37, of Fort Wayne.

The cause of death is gunshot wound to the chest and the manner of death is homicide.

A person of interest is currently being interviewed by detectives. Criminal charges will be determined once the interview is complete. There are no additional details at this time.

Erhardt is the 29th homicide in Allen County for 2021.

This remains under investigation by the FWPD, the Allen County’s Prosecutor’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
