Dec. 17 – Police: Allen County sheriff’s officer shoots man armed with gun

HUNTERTOWN — An Allen County Sheriff’s officer shot to death a man armed with a gun during a call regarding a mental health crisis, according to police.

At around 2:27 p.m. Dec. 17, officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department responded to the 2700 block of Ascension Court in Huntertown, in regards to a man saying he was armed with a gun and going through a mental health crisis, according to a statement from Sgt. Adam Griffith, sheriff’s department spokesman.

According to Griffith, the following occurred:

Officers arrived and tried to speak with the man to de-escalate the situation. The person left the residence at one point, armed with a gun, then went back inside. Just after 3:30 p.m., the Allen County Special Weapons and Tactics Team and the Allen County Crisis Negotiation Team were both paged to respond to the scene. Team members were starting to arrive to the staging area but had not begun initiating contact with the man.

Just before 4 p.m., the man left the residence again and was armed with a gun. One Allen County Sheriff’s Department officer discharged their firearm, striking the victim. Officers rendered medical aid to the victim, who was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The subject involved in the investigation was confirmed to be a man.

All the information is preliminary.

The Indiana State Police was called to the scene, per sheriff’s department policy.

This incident remains under investigation.
