Man struck by police car dies; investigation continues
From staff reports
The Fort Wayne Police Department on Monday expressed condolences to the family of a man who died after being hit by a police car Wednesday evening.
In a Facebook post Sunday, Barrett McNagny LLC law firm said, “Our Barrett family is simply devastated by the passing of our beloved Partner, Henry Najdeski. Henry was with our firm for more than twenty-five years and was recognized as one of the best real estate attorneys in northeast Indiana. He will be greatly missed by his Partners, co-workers, and clients.”
In a Monday statement, the FWPD said, “Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and colleagues” of Najdeski.
Sgt. Joshua Hartup was driving the car that was involved in that incident at South Calhoun and East Main streets. Nadjeski was taken to a hospital for what was described as life-threatening injuries. His death was disclosed over the weekend.
The FWPD said Hartup has returned to work. The FWPD is working with the Indiana State Police to complete an investigation and ISP has agreed to review all the evidence in the case.
Hartup joined the department Dec. 15, 1999. He received letters of reprimand for police vehicle accidents in 2000, 2005 and 2019, and a suspension for an accident in 2007. He has received the Award of Excellence (2001 and 2021), Letter of Commendation (2017 and 2022), and Community Service Citation (2019 and two in 2022). He has worked in Operations and Investigative. He was assigned to Investigative on March 22, 2022, following a 2-month temporary assignment in that role.
In its Facebook post, the law firm said, “First and foremost, Henry was a devoted husband and father and we all stand with the Najdeski family as they grieve and attempt to deal with this shocking and devastating loss.”
