Trio of Chargers headed to wrestling finals
Three Carroll wrestlers are state-bound following Saturday’s New Haven semi-state at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Senior Reeve Muncie (31-1) continued his winning postseason, placing first in the heavyweight bracket. Muncie earned three straight pins on the afternoon, capping off a nine-pin run over the past three weeks. He started the first round Saturday with a pin over South Adams’ Carter Lewis (19-9) in 1:55. He went on to pin Rochester Community’s Marshall Fishback (30-2) in 1:15 and Elkhart’s Jacob Sommer (25-10) in 1:16. In the championship round, Muncie defeated Western’s Braydon Erb (31-1) by 4-3 decision.
Also making the trip to state this year are seniors Evan Ulrick (32-1) and Matt Lepper (23-4), who placed second at 152 and 195, respectively. Muncie, Ulrick and Lepper are all returning to the state finals for the second year in a row.
The state finals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Carroll girls ninth at swim state finals
The Carroll girls swim team finished ninth overall during Saturday’s state finals at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
Junior Mya DeWitt was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in 52.91 seconds. She also placed fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.24 seconds.
Senior Teagen Moon finished ninth in the 100-yard butterfly in 56.33 seconds, and senior Samantha Horton placed 16th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.02.
The Chargers also placed in all three relays on the afternoon. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lexi Jankowski, DeWitt, Moon and Natalie Marshall were runners-up in 1:34.52. The 200-yard medley relay team of DeWitt, Horton, Moon and Natalie Marshall placed sixth in 1:43.65, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Lelah Davidson, Jankowski, Marshall and Moon placed 11th in 3:33.23.
Goodine places first against Homestead
Carroll gymnast Julia Goodine placed first all around against Homestead on Feb. 10. Goodine placed first on the uneven bars (9.8), first on floor exercise (9.575), second on vault (9.650) and fifth on balance beam (9).
Goodine bested runner-up Gina Zirrille 38.025-37.975.
The Spartans defeated the Chargers 109.3-107.9.
Seventh-grade Bobcats win conference championship
Maple Creek Middle School’s seventh-grade boys basketball team defeated Woodside in their conference championship Feb. 2, winning 28-19.
David Callison had a game-high seven points for the Bobcats. Mason Baughman and Brody Fisher had six points each, and Briggs Pardon added four. The seventh-grade Bobcats finished the season with a final record of 17-1.
The eighth-grade boys lost their championship game against Summit in overtime. Grant Johnson scored the final five points to force the game to overtime and took four charges in the game. Missed free throws and costly turnovers were the deciding factor. The Bobcats finished their season at 15-3.
Maple Creek wrestlers defeat ‘Busco, Eastside, Woodside
Maple Creek Middle School’s varsity wrestlers defeated Churubusco 51-30 on Feb. 9.
Winning for the Bobcats were Taegan McKinney, Luke Gallmeier, Trevor Noble, Eli Ward, Kaleb Blackburn, Jack Mitchell, Noah Bowser, Will Jeffries, Lucas Noble and Alicia DeWitt.
The junior varsity team blanked the Eagles 21-0. Winning for the Bobcats were Charles McCreary, Isaac Goleeke, Westyn Grothaus and Will Jeffries.
On Feb. 10, the varsity Bobcats defeated Eastside 42-33. After a hot start, the Bobcats wavered a bit through the middle weights, but once again the veteran eighth-graders came through down the stretch. Winning for the Bobcats were Teagan McKinney, Luke Gallmeier, Trevor Noble, Noah Bowser, Westyn Grothaus, Will Jeffries, Lucas Noble and Alicia DeWitt.
The JV wrestlers escaped with a 1-point victory, 10-9. Winning for the Bobcats were Charles McCreary and Jaydon Barrie.
The Bobcats went on to defeat Woodside on Feb. 11.
The varsity team won its meet 45-26. Varsity winners were Taegan McKinney, Kael Hunter, Trevor Noble, Kaleb Blackburn, Ricky Stroud, Will Jeffries, Jaydon Barrie, Lucas Noble and Alicia DeWitt.
The JV wrestlers dominated Woodside 27-6. Winners were Jack Mitchell, Ricky Stroud, Noah Bowser, Isaac Goleeke and Alicia DeWitt.
