Sports roundup: Charger boys volleyball rolling in first year

COLUMBIA CITY — This is the first year for boys volleyball as an emerging sport in Indiana and the Carroll Chargers are off to a great start.

Carroll is 15-4 entering the final week of the 2023 regular season after sweeping Columbia City last Thursday night, 3-0. The Chargers bested the Eagles, 25-19, 25-13, 25-16.

Spencer Ehle led the Chargers with 12 kills and three service aces. Vincent Derheimer had three digs and 25 assists. Sebastian Lopez added three digs.

The Chargers are in the midst of a busy week, with three matches on the schedule plus a tournament on Saturday, May 6, to wrap up their inaugural campaign. Carroll was slated to travel to Northridge Monday night, May 1, then host New Haven on Tuesday, May 2, and East Noble on Thursday, May 4.

Prep baseball

The No. 2 Carroll baseball team remained perfect on the 2033 season at 15-0 with three more wins last week.

The Chargers defeated Warsaw, 9-2 on Tuesday, April 25. Carroll fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first but scored four in the bottom of the second and added five more in the bottom of the fifth.

Warsaw got its second run in the top of the sixth. The Tigers managed just three hits against the Chargers.

Brady Long got the win, going 5 innings and striking out nine. Michael Dierckman mopped up with two innings of relief, striking out three.

Last Saturday, April 29, Carroll swept a doubleheader at Snider, winning the first game, 6-3 and taking Game 2, 15-1.

Jaxon Sparks got the win on the mound in Game 1, with Long earning a save. Sparks helped himself at the plate with three RBIs. Conner Barkel and Grant Peters also drove in runs.

In Game 2, Carroll jumped on the Panthers for 10 runs in the top of the first to set the tone for the five-inning contest shortened by the 10-run rule.

Cameron Saunders got the win to improve to 3-0. Andrew Sinish had a pair of doubles and three RBIs to lead the Charger offensive attack.

Carroll was slated to face Westfield on Tuesday, May 2, at Taylor University. The Chargers travel to Bishop Luers on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest and round out the week with a 1 p.m. tournament game against Penn on Saturday, May 6.

Charger softball

Carroll won a pair of games last week to even its season record at 6-6.

The Chargers lost to Leo, 9-1 on Tuesday, April 25; beat Snider, 15-3 on Thursday, April 26; and defeated Bishop Luers, 8-2 on Thursday, April 27.

At Snider, the Chargers got 13 hits. They scored five runs in the first inning, four in the second and six in the third in the contest stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Jaidyn Fuller led Carroll, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Addison Hupe was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Freshman Isabella Rapson got the win in the circle, striking out three.

At Bishop Luers, Carroll collected eight hits. The Chargers were again led by Jaidyn Fuller, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Lauren Kirkpatrick was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Sophomore Emilia Garcia was the winner in the circle, going the distance and striking out 11.

The Chargers were set to host East Noble on Tuesday, May 2, travel to Norwell on Thursday, May 4 and go to DeKalb on Friday, May 5. Carroll hosts Wawasee at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 6.

Boys golf

WAWSAW — Carroll dropped a nonconference dual meet to Warsaw last Wednesday at Stonehenge in a matchup decided by the fifth-score tiebreaker. Both teams shot 164.

The Chargers were led by Donny Dimberio, who carded a 39. Jacob Knitter added a 40, Keenan Beaty a 42, Sam Campbell and Joe Sellers rounded out the Carroll lineup with a 50.

Carroll is in action next on Saturday, May 6 at the Plymouth Match Play Tournament at Pretty Lake Golf Club.

Pairings set

The Carroll softball and baseball teams know who they’ll be facing in the upcoming IHSAA Class 4A state tournaments.

Draws for both tournaments were held Sunday night, April 30, by the IHSAA.

The dates for the sectional tournament games will be determined later.

Carroll baseball will host a Class 4A sectional. The Chargers drew a first-round bye and will play the winner of a first-round matchup between Northrop and DeKalb in the semifinals.

North Side and Snider also received byes and will meet in the other semifinal.

The Charger softball team will be in the DeKalb Sectional. Carroll drew a first-round bye and will face Northrop in a semifinal matchup. North Side also received a bye and will face the winner of the North Side-DeKalb opening round game in the other semifinal.
