About Civil War
The Civil War Round Table of North East Indiana will meet at 6:30 p.m. May 8 at the Allen County Public Library Main Branch in downtown For Wayne. The public is welcome. The group will meet in the theater room on the lower level.
The program will be on Eric Wittenberg’s book “The Devil’s to Pay: John Buford at Gettysburg.” Wittenberg is an award-winning historian, blogger, speaker, tour guide, and author of more than 20 books. He is an advocate for Civil War Trust and battlefield preservation.

Fridays in May
Trinity English Lutheran Church, 450 W. Washington St., Fort Wayne, will host its Fridays in May concert series from 12:10-12:40 p.m. four dates in May. Programs will be either in Krauss Chapel or the church nave. A $2 lunch will be served in Wagenhal’s Hall immediately after each program.
The May 5 concert is “Woodwind Quintets from Around the World” with: Luke Fitzpatrick, flute; Pavel Morunov, oboe; Laurie Blanchet, clarinet; Michael Galbraith, horn; and Dennis Fick, bassoon. The series continues: May 12, “Show Tunes”; May 19, “Spring” and “Summer” from Vivaldi’s “The Seasons”; and May 26, “Raising the Roof,” a program for brass, percussion and organ.

Stamp Out Hunger
The National Association of Letter Carriers will sponsor the Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday, May 13. Residents are asked to place nonperishable food donations in a bag by the mailbox for letter carriers to collect.
In Fort Wayne, food donations will be received at the Associated Churches’ Food Bank and redistributed to 21 local food pantries. Associated Churches of Fort Wayne & Allen County needs volunteers for that effort. To volunteer, contact kelley@associatedchurhes.org or call 260-422-3528.
Helping youth
St. Paul Gar Creek Lutheran Church, LCMS, 1910 N. Berthaud Road, New Haven, is seeking a part-time youth group director to lead and facilitate youth programs.

Trillium Club
The Trillium Garden Club will sell plants and related garden items from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. May 16 at the Aboite Fire Station, 11321 Aboite Center Road, Fort Wayne.
The plant sale will feature perennials, shade plants, trees, ground cover, bulbs, vegetables and more. Club members grow all of the plants in their gardens. The club has conducted the sale for more than 50 years.
The club, with members from throughout the Fort Wayne area, supports 4-H, Little River Wetland Project, Master Gardeners, and other projects. It also maintains the gardens at the old Aboite Center School House.
Friendship Day
Church Women United will observe May Friendship Day at 1 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Waynedale United Methodist, 2501 Church St., Fort Wayne.
Karla Lipsey of The Rescue Mission will speak on the theme “Labor to Love — A Heart to Care.”

Music service
May Music Festival at Trinity English Lutheran Church will incorporate seven of Trinity’s music ensembles and professional orchestra, led by staff musicians Robert Hobby and Evan Anderson.
The “festive music service” begins at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 7, at Trinity, 450 W. Washington Blvd., Fort Wayne.
This year’s service will include the premiere of a piece written specifically for Handbell Director Shannon Hicks Hardiek, the Trinity Ringers, and orchestra.
Cedar Creek
The Friends of Cedar Creek annual meeting will be 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at ACRES Land Trust, 1802 Chapman Road, Huntertown.
Members will enjoy breakfast food, coffee and juice, and see a presentation by Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehab.
Flag retirement
The public is invited to bring their torn and worn American flags to a flag retirement at May 6 in the parking lot of VFW Jim Eby Post 857, 2202 W. Main St., Fort Wayne. The entrance drive is off of Leesburg Road.
At 9 a.m., a brief opening ceremony will include the presentation of colors, singing of the national anthem, folding of the American flag with the meanings of each fold, presentation of the American flag on behalf of a grateful nation to the family of an Army veteran who passed away during COVID who did not receive a military honors funeral, and retirement of flags.
Matt Careins is the chairman of the event. Terrence L. Taylor Sr. of Marine Corps League Detachment 1435 will narrate.
‘Into the Woods’
Fort Wayne Civic Theatre will present “Into the Woods” in six performances May 6-14. Performances are at the Arts United Center, 303 E. Main St., Fort Wayne.
Diverse storybook characters share in a “timeless, yet uniquely relevant piece of musical theatre.” Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim are based on a book by James Lapine.

Food trucks!
Join Food Truck Friday at Woodburn Community Park on Overmeyer Street to raise money for a splash pad and restroom. Hours are 5-8 p.m. May 12, June 2, July 14 and Aug. 11.
