FORT WAYNE — The Carroll High School girls basketball team won its third straight game Friday night, besting Bishop Luers on the road, 59-52.

With the win, the Chargers improved to 11-6 overall (4-2 in the Summit Athletic Conference, good for fourth).

The win was the first game of a boys-girls doubleheader.

This one was a close one for most of the night: The two teams were tied at 32 at halftime, but the Chargers used a 6-0 run to close the third quarter and take a 47-41 lead into the final eight minutes.

Carroll led by as many as nine in the fourth.

Kayla Gibbs led the Chargers with 17 points, Taylor Fordyce added 14 and Jersey Paul chipped in with 11.

Gibbs said some defensive changes in the second half — including switching to man-to-man defense — helped the Chargers pull away to the win.

Carroll assistant coach Bobbie Poynter said the Knights were having some success against the Charger zone, with several Carroll players getting in early foul trouble.

“Our full-court press gave us more energy,” Poynter said.

Carroll returns to action Friday night at home against South Side. It will be another boys-girls twin bill with the girls tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow approximately 20 minutes after the end of the girls contest.
